Cotton socks and… cotton socks
Back in the day, only a few fabrics were used to make socks. You could choose from cotton socks and… cotton socks. We're being a bit silly, but honestly, it was not that long ago that you didn't have a lot of choice in what your socks were made of. And to be honest, cotton is still the most commonly used material for socks.
Fabric is important when it comes to socks
Now you may think “yes I get that, the fabric is important when it comes to any item of clothing”. And you would be right about that, but it is even more important when it comes to underwear and socks. For one simple reason: in that category, you wear the fabric directly on your skin. The reason that so many cotton socks are produced is that cotton lasts a long time. Because you probably understand that socks are the most susceptible to wear and tear of all items of clothing. Your feet are on the move all day, often even when you are sitting still. And your feet are often “closed in” in your shoes. And then we come to the second aspect of cotton socks: moisture absorption.
Cotton socks have long been the best moisture absorber
Another reason that cotton was (is) so often used for socks: moisture absorption. For a long time there was actually no alternative to cotton, except for wool. But wool has a disadvantage, because it is not machine washable. And that is not useful with socks, which are perhaps the most washed items of clothing. That is why some brands combine wool and cotton.
Naturally, Undiemeister®️ does socks in our own unique way
Plastics, such as polyamide or polyester, are also often used, but they absorb moisture very poorly. Not necessarily a bad thing if those fabrics are added to socks (we do that too), but if the socks consist entirely or mainly of those fabrics, you will notice that your feet will get sweaty very quickly. Cotton socks are a better choice, even if they are not ideal either. In the past, it seems a long time ago now, we also manufactured bamboo socks. But Undiemeister®️ (naturally) does things in our own unique way, mainly by using TENCEL™: wonderfully soft, perfect ventilation, and good moisture regulation. And oh yes, cotton too, but organic.
