It seems as if everyone is talking about one thing: sustainability. Everything has to be sustainable. And yes, sustainability is certainly important, but it can also become a bit too much of a good thing and at a certain point you can no longer see the (sustainable) forest for the trees. Regardless of what is really sustainable or supposedly sustainable. Because you must be sustainable to be part of anything nowadays, there are a lot of false claims. Like, yes you guessed it, sustainable underwear. Because sustainability has also become a buzzword when it comes to underwear. Or organic underwear, call it whatever you want.

So everything has to be sustainable, but where does sustainability really make a difference? The answer is simple: with items that are mass produced. One of those items is underwear. But what is sustainable underwear? What should you look out for? You're on the right page for answers to these questions. We know everything about sustainable underwear and, okay, organic underwear, even if we think that's a slightly odd term.

Our experiences with durable underwear

We have been producing underwear since 2011, particularly sustainable underwear. So if you're thinking of buying underwear, pay attention. What is important? First of all, the production process of the underwear, by which we mean the fabric. Everything starts with the fabric, which is where more than 80% of the sustainability lies. Does the fabric have a natural origin, from a plant for example, or is the fabric made of a synthetic fibre? In the latter case, this usually involves chemical, polluting processes. Not so good.

But also fabrics made from plants can be less than ideal when it comes to underwear. Like cotton, for example, which is a plant. The problem with cotton is that it is a very vulnerable plant. Vulnerable to weather influences, vulnerable to insects. That is why a lot of pesticides are used in the production of cotton. And that's not okay. Not for the environment and not for the people who have to work with it, often in developing countries. So, if you are buying underwear, please keep this in mind.

And keep in mind that cotton needs a lot of water. Entire lakes have already been drained because of the adjacent cotton plantations. Lake Aral is one such example. That is by no means sustainable because water is fast becoming a very scarce commodity for mankind. And while we're on the subject of cotton underwear, what about the soil erosion that occurs during the growing process; the soil is in fact being exhausted.

Organic cotton is a big step forward

Organic underwear (it's in the name) or organic cotton is much better. Instead of pesticides, insects are used to combat other harmful insects, completely natural. The water used is water that is obtained naturally. So no artificial irrigation, but rainwater. A big step forward. So if you're thinking of buying underwear, pay attention to this.

The production process is decisive when it comes to durability

And then the production process. Chemicals are often used, also for organic underwear. Usually there is no other option, but are these recycled? Is everything that can possiby be done to limit CO2 emissions actually being done? Pay close attention to this when choosing your underwear and especially with underwear that is being sold as sustainable underwear. Or organic underwear. Is the supplier transparent? Do you know where it is produced? So, if you are going to buy underwear, this is something to look out for.

Our experience with bamboo underwear is that part of it is okay in terms of sustainability, but a large part is not. The production process for making bamboo viscose is not transparent. We were very disappointed by this and that is why we stopped producing bamboo underwear and developed the new Mellowood fabric.
